Here's a little game we have been playing lately! We have 5 or 6 sight words to learn every week. So to review these we play Guess my Word! I put it under the projector. I write in the blanks as I go through it. Students write what their guess is as we go down the line on their marker boards. Many of them can figure it out before the we get to the end of the sheet. I hope to turn this in to a game they can play in pairs during workstations. FUN! Fun! <br />

My kids needed some extra practice so I made this. I am going to put the cards around the room and have the students use clipboards as they write the sentences by the matching pictures. I even added a answer key for student to self check or as an easy reference for you to check it quickly. I've just been so busy this year. I'm learning a new school, new grade, new curriculum. I feel like I have meetings, meetings, meetings. On top of meetings, I have an after school program, L2 that I run twice a week. CRAZY! <br />
Well, we are beginning long vowels this week. So today I showed my kids the super e song on youtube. THEY LOVED IT!! If you teach CVCe words show this video! It's super cute and the kids love it. <br />

<img src="http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u378/designbychristi/kingdom/lisa_zps23e4eef7.png" />I just finished up my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Learning-Long-Vowels-994281">Long Vowel Centers </a><br />
In this packet there are 3 real/nonsense word sort. These are for long a, i, o. These are great for a pocket chart.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBc5RP7phBDW_uTRl3OyIdbZsXLN-OHeG4URkEhaT1Iwjt9D2HSSWvsHSMLJht8lKbFscqhxXm2V2sIc0jykhXHFwUxyHa4KSX8ZvG11CG35hfmt6HqZe8BUX_5t7CeVHNdI04hcN_rYsn/s1600/LONG+VOWELS2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBc5RP7phBDW_uTRl3OyIdbZsXLN-OHeG4URkEhaT1Iwjt9D2HSSWvsHSMLJht8lKbFscqhxXm2V2sIc0jykhXHFwUxyHa4KSX8ZvG11CG35hfmt6HqZe8BUX_5t7CeVHNdI04hcN_rYsn/s640/LONG+VOWELS2.jpg" width="492" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are four books like this one. Students make a flip book to change the short vowel word to a long vowel word. They glue the new word under the flap and write the new word. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEClLSgBje9z_Fg3bm5YEVcUpDVr1JPYMe1KMmXTt-Kb7NNZKOl0eaJNWWw4ItcZK1n5FSCJuiy4AGONXofU19HeFCjvQb33uYdOq87cntXg8JopfVGaCkhLeBIzboFD1fP224K2VskBIC/s1600/LONG+VOWELS5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEClLSgBje9z_Fg3bm5YEVcUpDVr1JPYMe1KMmXTt-Kb7NNZKOl0eaJNWWw4ItcZK1n5FSCJuiy4AGONXofU19HeFCjvQb33uYdOq87cntXg8JopfVGaCkhLeBIzboFD1fP224K2VskBIC/s320/LONG+VOWELS5.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
There are 13 puzzles like this. I added velcro to the back of mine and students velcroed them to the mat to create puzzles. The students LOVE this activity. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOjLcflKpYRayQqipOrf9Y_HAfRYrAnid_jxsC0ZxX3e-t2rf3Q7jivxxT1G-POdyCZnUOQSpIi9NmNxrHWm6iYL1yf1OSdjaIjQjQUr6UXYKSB7Hj8YWkkee2CVHN2LoV9tDg2XFEf00w/s1600/LONG+VOWELS4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOjLcflKpYRayQqipOrf9Y_HAfRYrAnid_jxsC0ZxX3e-t2rf3Q7jivxxT1G-POdyCZnUOQSpIi9NmNxrHWm6iYL1yf1OSdjaIjQjQUr6UXYKSB7Hj8YWkkee2CVHN2LoV9tDg2XFEf00w/s320/LONG+VOWELS4.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the word-picture sort. The students match the words to the pictures and then sort the nonsense words by vowel. There is a recording sheet to complete with this activity. <br />

Sorry, it's been awhile since I have blogged! I have been so busy getting used to the new school and new district. Just when I think I have things figured out, I find out something else that I am missing. Now to start report cards. It's so different than my old school!!! <br />
<br />
With guided reading being a big part of our afternoon I needed to stay on track with my time! I need to make sure that I am watching the clock; which I am not the best at. So this summer I got a new Time Tracker from <a href="http://www.smilemakers.com/">SmileMakers!</a> I LOVE IT!! It is so helpful; not only to me but to the kids. They can see when we are almost over with guided reading groups. They don't need to ask. The colors on the Time Tracker helps the students see how much time we still have! I HIGHLY recommend this product! I has been a much needed addition to my classroom. I'm not sure how I ever taught without it. <br />
Well, I have been making things to supplement the 1st Grade McGraw Hill Wonders Curriculum. I just made this cute SWAT game for Unit 2. I have a games workstation. They have been playing BANG! I thought I'd change it up a little bit. The kids use pick a card and read it. If they know it they keep it. If they don't it goes back in pile. If they pick a SWAT card all their cards go back in the pile. I also have a shower curtain keyboard so I might pull that out and let them spell with that. Depends on how quiet they can be. It's hard to play some of those games during workstations. They get a little uncontrollable!! <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx-rcJn6-x3nZDhnQ0FYSGZORUE/edit?usp=drive_web"> SWAT!</a> <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also took all the Essential Questions from the Curriculum and made them fancy! I got tired of writing them out every week on sentence strips. They are in my TPT store. If you would like to grab a copy just click on the picture. </div>

One more fun thing to share. I have seen this large magnetic center on Pinterest a couple of times and wanted to make it but didn't have room for it. I found a large wall with nothing on it and went to Wal-Mart. I got a large automotive drip pan and some heavy duty velco. And $20 later I had the magnetic center of my dreams. I seriously LOVE it! The kids do so much better. They are fumbling around with little magnets in a box and the clean up is quick and easy! If you have the room it's worth it! <br />

I'm exhausted! <span style="font-size: x-large;">This was our first full week!</span> <span style="font-size: x-large;">I'm not sure who is more tired me or the kids. It was exhausting. At home my oldest cut this arm and had to get four stitches, my dog got sick and had to go to vet, and my Kindergartener daughter fell on a clipboard and hurt her chest! My kids are full or DANGER! GEEZ! I think I need to lock them in the house for awhile. Lol</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Well, back to school. So I got Workstations up and running this week. I put them in groups of four or five and did four rounds. The first day, Wednesday, was a little shaky but by Friday they were starting to get the hang of reading the work board and understanding how things roll. I'm glad we have one more week for me to walk around and keep things moving. There are some times the kids just need a little motivation to keep going the whole time. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">The highlight of work stations was the word wall words stations. Smelly markers, gel pens to write with will make any kid happy! I have a big window by the word wall so I got some window markers. I let the kids write the words on the window after writing them on the paper. THEY LOVED IT!! By far a fav! If you have a window I highly recommend it. Easy Peasy! and the love it! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Here's a pic of a cutie writing. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOqYaTJCzkCqU3g2Hly0imHZJjNN4nffLiXo9HmBuzTA-egupKzu-87-CGxxCiCrhObgThedgTUm8YNTeIn2BiQNZe-8c7d-V14schTxeoSGAEGTHzfJmC0P6diNpIJ0Y8MzFjvES-I_6O/s1600/IMG_20130823_123341_366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOqYaTJCzkCqU3g2Hly0imHZJjNN4nffLiXo9HmBuzTA-egupKzu-87-CGxxCiCrhObgThedgTUm8YNTeIn2BiQNZe-8c7d-V14schTxeoSGAEGTHzfJmC0P6diNpIJ0Y8MzFjvES-I_6O/s320/IMG_20130823_123341_366.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Another favorite is the word work. I had the kids making words by rolling dice with beginning letters in one dice and the ending chunks in the other. Then charting them as real or nonsense word. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoq97DRBN7glObAtuOwUQa6SZfDB1n1B9paDi_mB-7vr9xyXotUTiwDMtS4ru1zj09Gq5XAb2sdFi8VsCplvGIJ4UuNb7zsAHqhnFjEFm780c9OAqhywYKa0OZJv-WrYh4weoj1d_ngTsb/s1600/IMG_20130823_123321_611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoq97DRBN7glObAtuOwUQa6SZfDB1n1B9paDi_mB-7vr9xyXotUTiwDMtS4ru1zj09Gq5XAb2sdFi8VsCplvGIJ4UuNb7zsAHqhnFjEFm780c9OAqhywYKa0OZJv-WrYh4weoj1d_ngTsb/s320/IMG_20130823_123321_611.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">We got these nice sheet protectors. It makes sliding papers in a breeze. The school just gave each of us 20! What a nice gift! I'm loving them. No more wasting papers and no more laminating!! </span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Wonders-Magnetic-Sight-Word-Center-843738"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD1kj6Zx3v1bCaau-g3rZrcAqGAcvKJ8DmN9rVn2ld6VJK5R2NyrjNiGFPBdxoty-t4varaMbxhtur2T3RqJKD4bBONaEVtQyZ1-UtOIzw-X0kZk-q__mxjcYq0HVURijCWUZfmVxWS-bO/s320/IMG_20130823_123417_065.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Another fun station, I recently made. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Magnetic words. I made a sheet for every unit that we do this year. It'll be so easy to change out. Just change the copy and get to work. Students build the words with magnets and then color them to match. You just have to watch out for the sneaky kid who looks at the letters and just colors them without making the words. Caught one doing that today! He had to make them all and show me before coloring!! Don't think that will happen again. If you use 1st grade Wonders <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Wonders-Magnetic-Sight-Word-Center-843738">here is the link</a> you can grab your pack and have an easy center for the whole year! </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">We have been talking about rules and in social studies we were comparing rules from 1860 to rules now. The kids thought it was funny that kids had to wear long sleeve clothes and have their ankles covered at all times. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Anyway we came up with our own rules. So since we are the Coyotes our Principal always says that we HOWL for success. I thought it'd be fun to come up with an acroymn for HOWL to come up with our rules. The kids did surprisingly well. They came up with some good rules. Check out our poster! I'm pretty proud! Fun times! </span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Well, it's here! The day I've been waiting for all summer! The first day of school! My first day as a 1st grade teacher! It was fun! Busy but fun! I even ate lunch on the run.<br />
So the highlight definitely was Magic playdoh! I have done magic playdoh for years in Kindergarten. I wasn't going to do it this year but really wanted to after meeting my kids at open house. We saved it till the end of the day. The kids LOVED it! Here is the poem I attached to the baggie. I found this poem off another blog but couldn't get it to print so I typed it up again. Here it is if you want to use it. <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx-rcJn6-x3nZV9KNVZXaGRiVkk/edit?usp=sharing">magic playdoh poem</a><br />
<br />
Fun, fun, fun!! <br />
We also read the book <i>First Day Jitters by Julie Danneburg</i><br />
Then we completed our first class book. We made Faces and Feelings on the 1st day of 1st grade. I was impressed with their illustrations. So much different than the first day of Kindergarten!! That's for sure! <i> </i>Here is the link to the book pages. <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bx-rcJn6-x3nTWh6bE04OTd3Wk0/edit?usp=sharing">Faces and Feelings on the 1st day of 1st grade! </a><br />

My first item created for my first grade classroom. I took all of our first grade high frequency words and make word work sheet for each week. Students trace the word, write, stamp and then glue. Easy peasy. Simple and easy for kids to do every week as the words change. I also created a sheet so you can change the words every week. It's editable if you open it with power point. Click on picture to take you to my TPT store. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: x-large;"></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">Spin to win Freebie- practice the words mom and dad with this freebie. Students just take a paperclip and hold it with a pencil in the middle of the circle. Students flick it and wherever it stops they write that word in a column. Whichever column gets to the top first wins. The first time students just trace the word. I also included a blank spin to win so you can make your own game with two words you are practicing! Students love it! Laminate it and play over and over.</span> <br />

I'm having a great time at the Kindergarten Conference. After being asked to present the past three years, I finally made it work this year. My first time presenting outside of my district. I think I pasted. I went a little fast and need to learn to pace myself a little better but overall I feel that it went well. <br />
For those of you that couldn't join in the fun. I will post my handouts and power point. I presented on Guided Math. I newfound love of mine. Much of what I know I learn from the book Guided Math by Laney Sammons. Click on the picture of get your copy from Amazon. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love how the kids are so independent and I can reach them all at their level. Is it the best way to DIFFERENTIATE math!! We do this so well with guided reading and not so well with math. <br />

We did a short little make and take with my number ladders. It is in the end of the handouts! Print these on cardstock and make for the whole class. These are super cute, easy to make, and really helps kids get a firm grasp on addition and subtraction. </div>

After reading this chapter I felt validated in myself as a guided reading teacher. I do set up routines really well. The more I teach the slower and more intentional I am in the beginning. I introduce the independent literacy activities in the beginning of the year. I use baskets one for each table. I put simple easy activities like magnetic letters, marker boards, playdoh and books. This gives students some book skills and lets them explore. We do each for 20 minutes and then the next day we switch the baskets. I really works well at the beginning of the year. I like how Jan Richardson suggested pulling each group over to introduce a literacy center. I will definitely do this THIS year. I will be teaching 1st grade and be doing literacy work stations instead of Daily 5. While I am sad to leave Kindergarten and my love of Daily 5; I am embracing the change! After all the only constant thing in life is change. I have been reading Debbie Diller's book <em>Literacy Work Stations</em> also so that has helped me with work stations.<br />
Anyway, the biggest topic to take away from this chapter is take it SLOW! Help students gain independence. I appreciate how she says to use a time. There is a great online time at <a href="http://www.online-stopwatch.com/">www.online-stopwatch.com</a> it's easy to show through a projector if you have one in your room. There are some fun ones like the man running to the finish line or the bomb with the fuse slowly getting smaller. However, just be cautious they are eye catching and sometimes students will be watching the timer instead of doing their work. I found the egg timer works the best and isn't distracting. <br />
I enjoyed reading this chapter and look forward to more learning with Jan Richardson. <br />
<br />
<br />
One a side note, I am changing grade levels and want to change my blog. Anyone have any great ideas for a new name? I was thinking Learning with Lisa but that is taken. DARN! I wanted to not make it so grade level specific but catchy, fun and easy to remember. If you have any ideas..... let me know! I'm open! <br />

So recently one of my friends showed me a little bag her daughter made at daycare. It's so easy I had to make them for word bags next year. I love to make word bags every year where the kids can write their sight words on notecards as they learn them and add them to their bag. Then they always have their words with them and can practice anytime. <br />
Get yourself some Ziploc freezer bags and decorative duct tape. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwCFZyvnhTFvJ4fsm36wol6kSfXlXlioHFfi0AMt1JNrraFLJjSLUfR_R4FPgVwfXsPF-nZMJjnL_E5rKwbdFqEuKYDJhuAZoXoqDZ0vCHCsnxGgMDnfKKRI98PEYCmkLOHbHqRtBMalGK/s1600/IMG_20130603_225100_768.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwCFZyvnhTFvJ4fsm36wol6kSfXlXlioHFfi0AMt1JNrraFLJjSLUfR_R4FPgVwfXsPF-nZMJjnL_E5rKwbdFqEuKYDJhuAZoXoqDZ0vCHCsnxGgMDnfKKRI98PEYCmkLOHbHqRtBMalGK/s320/IMG_20130603_225100_768.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm doing zebra stripes theme in my room next year so I got pink and green zebra stripes. Then just roll the tape across the front then the back. You have to cover it with 5 strips of tape. Then to make the handle just take a piece of duct tape as long as you would like and fold in half. Then tuck under the duct tape on the top of each side. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
CUTE! CUTE! CUTE! I love them. They are durable and easy to make. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It seriously took me 5 minutes or less to make one and you can make it while watching TV. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Who doesn't love that?? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One roll of tape covers four bags. You could use the smaller bags and get more bags per roll. You can get the colored decorative duct tape at any store! They have tons of different kinds. The kids will love them and they will last all year! </div>

You could use them for math manipulatives, purses and wallets when learning money, the possibilities are endless! <br />

So I thought I'd blog a little about the highlights from each chapter. Even if you don't have your centers set up this way, I'm sure you can learn a little from this book. I am! <br />
<br />Chapter 1: What is a Literacy Work Station?<br />
Literacy work station is an area in your classroom where students work and learn together. Two students are usually in a center at a time. I have done work stations this way in the past we just called them Literacy circles. The main difference is that once you have introduced literacy work stations they are not changed all year. <br />
Some of the highlights are that teachers need to model then gradually release responsibility until students can have total independence. <br />
Debbie's Non-Negotiables:<br />
* Focus on practice and purpose not just the stuff of stations.<br />
*Link to your teaching<br />
*Slow down to speed up. Take it slow in the beginning. You won't regret it. <br />
* Balance process and product. <br />
*Less is more<br />
* Use novelty<br />
*Simplify<br />
<br />
OK so there are a few I need to work on... <br />
It is so hard in the beginning of the school year to want to introduce it all so that you can get going with guided reading. But really you need to go slow so that when it is time to start guided reading you can focus on guided reading not what the kids are doing. The students need to be independent first!! <br />
I think I need to remember...less is more. As I was cleaning out my classroom I found so many things and asked myself "Why?" I had so many things I that I have bought over the years and have never used. This move will be good for me to rethink how I use my stuff and get rid of the things that I don't need. <br />
Do you use the Literacy Work Stations Model? Do you like it? I'd love some feedback from people that have. I'm excited to use this method. I have use Daily 5 the past four years and love it but my new school uses Literacy Work Stations. Any ideas would be helpful? <br />
<br />
Oh ok course I can't leave without sharing my latest and greatest!! I finally figured out how to bundle my writing centers! It took forever to upload it to TPT but it's there! 22 centers to use all year. If you would like any other ones you don't see let me know. <br />

I love these. The kids love to sit in front of the pocket chart with a clipboard and write. <br />
I made a new school items for the beginning of the school year and a community helpers writing center. I also made some number centers. One is 0-10 and the other is 10-20 number words. I just made color words also. I'm working on a shape one to be up soon. Once I figure out how to bundle all of them I will. Click on the picture of each to go directly to my TPT store! <br />

<br />
Well with only 7 days left of school it's crazy! Today we had a record high of 100 degrees. WHEW! That's a hot one. It's crazy that 12 days ago we had snow falling. This Nebraska weather is crazy!! <br />
<br />
In my classroom we are learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. Luckily we had all 5 caterpillars form into their crystallis! YAY! Hoping they come out before school is out! We might be cutting it close. <br />
<br />
Well...............................Now the news.......................<br />
Next year I will finally graduate from Kindergarten. After 11 years, I will move to 1st grade. I took another job at another district. It is a time of a lot of changes! I'm excited, sad, nervous, and happy all at the same time! I know the next week isn't going to be easy for me to leave my school. It was the first job I had out of college. It's where I grew as a teacher and person. I had all three of my kids while teaching there and have grown to know and love everyone. Some of my best friends are there! Such a bittersweet move! I just wish I could get through a day without crying. I'm such a wreck! Wish me luck! <br />

We are going to the ZOO!! We are getting so excited! The kids can't wait. And best of all we will have nice weather. I just saw it is suppose to be 77 on Tuesday. LOVE! Especially since it has been so close here all spring! I saw on the news tonight they have four month old lion cubs and a baby hippo. AHHH! How cute! Can't wait to see them! So many of my kids do not get to go to the zoo so it will be a first time for some! I love to see their faces. </div>

Scrambled Sentence book</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So next week we are starting our Scrambled sentence book. I just created this to help my students composing sentences a little more. We will read the mixed up sentence and then rewrite it the correct way. Then students need to draw/finish the picture to match the sentence. It is great review and practice for students! </div>

DONE!I'm so happy to get my May Calendar books done! I spend a lot of time on these each month. I now have January through May complete. This month I added a couple pages to spice things up. We don't want the kids to get bored during this last month of school. Only 24 days left! Not that I'm counting! <br />
Here are a couple pictures of the new pages this month. Of course a lot of the same monthly pages are still in the packet. Calendar, days of the week, months of the year, counting the days in school, weather graph, Daily domino, Daily Double Dice roll, Problem of the day. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP-_wT_4VWZhgHtBCd8_z4gxUCqZVEt-w7D3ZbBpLGcMng-3MdDelqGPA9ckTNGvrCZvuczwNuN8Q8Nd_nWLaIE94DtbYlKTOKReaJJPZxjO0XmENxVqpL1f_fxnoKAkQfR3_2a3PRMGV_/s1600/may+calendar+book.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhP-_wT_4VWZhgHtBCd8_z4gxUCqZVEt-w7D3ZbBpLGcMng-3MdDelqGPA9ckTNGvrCZvuczwNuN8Q8Nd_nWLaIE94DtbYlKTOKReaJJPZxjO0XmENxVqpL1f_fxnoKAkQfR3_2a3PRMGV_/s320/may+calendar+book.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This page is new. If you can't print these pages in color just have the kids circle yesterday with a blue marker, today with green, and tomorrow with red before you start. Then they will get the hang of it. You could cross out yesterday since it is in the past, circle today and underline tomorrow. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm excited about this birthday page. We celebrate birthdays all year when they happen. Since this is the last month before summer it will be a great memory page for them to remember their friends and when their birthdays are. I am just going to have the helper tell us his/her birthday and write in that name. That way we are only doing one name a day. If you want to do more you can to speed it up. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is another new page. I am going to have the kids color the date on the chart. Then they can actually see if the number is odd or even. I will have the students write the day number on the line and circle odd or even. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This month I am doing Daily Domino with subtraction. I also added Double Dice Roll with addition. You can choose if you want to do both pages with addition and subtraction or just pick one of each. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is an example of the Problem of the Day pages. I work hard to make all of these different. There are a few that I have continued each month just to give kids practice. I hope that you enjoy the differentiation of the problems. </div>

So we are busy getting ready for the zoo! Only 15 more days!!! I can't wait! I made a zoo packet that we are going to use while we learn all about the zoo. First we have a countdown chain! Everyday we are taking off a number until we get to the zoo.<br />
Click on the picture to grab your copy of the packet! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are going to do a writing project starting next week. Each student will pick an animal that lives at the zoo. We have a lot of easy nonfiction books in our library that focus on only one animal in the book. I will get a book for each child. If you don't have enough books you could pair your students up and do this as a partner activity. So the students will fill in the animal web. They will write in the covering, what the animal eats, and where it lives. They will also find an interesting fact about the animal. I know some of the words will be hard to read but the students should be able to see the animals from the pictures in the book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLTpmKr2ysS6eYXJQQfQXxEVawkMv-mVV0dSoCON08xiTyITqggnQfWTyWORCe-N_l-8E47Uwn78vKHHckjwwqeURo8OV_6_Bw_Iy-ZqygOng9r73ajMXMLLR9oMD3ao7dsqYPeGuL5oBF/s1600/zoo3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLTpmKr2ysS6eYXJQQfQXxEVawkMv-mVV0dSoCON08xiTyITqggnQfWTyWORCe-N_l-8E47Uwn78vKHHckjwwqeURo8OV_6_Bw_Iy-ZqygOng9r73ajMXMLLR9oMD3ao7dsqYPeGuL5oBF/s320/zoo3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After writing in the web. The students will fill in the chart to tell about their animal. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjo2nJBoIL-n-ACAJ19h7rQKSZ2gkyQWhAoCgdGv7Pln5tKrab0RV-rPNmKan29cdS3Kr-Yjlwdow1IOTcpo0yjAtpqpyTZGHJAjktQCTZUwXs-3zqs-WVqvo6B7iqe-Y4TJ8ljwKX5bm6/s1600/zoo4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjo2nJBoIL-n-ACAJ19h7rQKSZ2gkyQWhAoCgdGv7Pln5tKrab0RV-rPNmKan29cdS3Kr-Yjlwdow1IOTcpo0yjAtpqpyTZGHJAjktQCTZUwXs-3zqs-WVqvo6B7iqe-Y4TJ8ljwKX5bm6/s320/zoo4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then students will write sentences to tell about their animals. They can write so much from the pictures in the books. This is a fun activity that helps the student learn about zoo animals. </div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And, my favorite! Story problems. My kids are getting so good at these. We work hard to read through the story together and figure out if we will add or subtract. It will be interesting to see them draw the animals. I created 6 addition and 6 subtraction story problems. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Animal equations! I created 12 addition and 12 subtraction cards. Students use the pictures to write equations. I also created an answer sheet for each checking. My students love these! </div>

I started to make some thematic ones to use as you teach different units. I like using these because the kids copy the word by the picture. This is better than just using thematic word walls because they have something to look at later as they read the word. Many of my kids are ELL and do not have a lot of background knowledge. So these writing centers help them build their vocabulary. Here are a few that I have in my TPT store. Try them out! You kids will love them! <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is our Daily Domino page. I did make an addition and a subtraction page. We are going to do the addition page and then do subtraction problem with the double dice. But choose which ones fits your kids needs best. :) </div>

<br />
We enjoyed doing write the date last month so we are going to continue it. The kids really started to catch on to the process of writing the date. They are getting better everyday. So I felt that it would be good to practice again. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is the Daily Double Dice Roll. We are going to do it with subtraction. If you wanted to make it addition just add an extra line to the make it a plus sign before you copy it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is an example of the problem of the day. I work hard to create these so they are different everyday. There are a few that I have repeated from last month because my kids need more practice with them. There is a mix of number writing, addition, shapes, subtraction, and story problems. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And now for your FREEBIE! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
During calendar we use our 100 chart and do a random number search everyday. I have the helper of the day pick a specific color crayon to use. Then he/she picks a card out of a little bag. The helper tells everyone the number and then they repeat it. We talk about how many tens and how many ones. Then we talk about where it is on the 100 chart. We find it and color it in on the chart. We do this for 5 numbers a day. It's amazing how much it has helped even my lowest students with number recognition. </div>
I made new number cards to use. Mine we ones I made quick with notecards and a marker. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the number cards. Use them as you wish. The are bright fun colors for spring. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
In November, we got a letter from the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo that we could do a Read Around the World program. Our kids were to write down every book they read and the school that read the most would win a FREE trip to the zoo for the whole school! We worked hard and wrote every book down. We do Daily 5 at our school so the kids would count every book during Read to Self. Teachers counted every book they read and everyone got involved. Every week we showed our total during community. The numbers grew from 2,000 then 6,534 and at the end we were at 32, 543 books!! YES 200 kids read that many books! WOW! The zoo called with the exciting news. Our principal came in and told me at 2:30 the day before community. I got to tell every the next morning! It was so fun! I kept telling them "I have a secret" Then I would say "Do you want to know?" of course, everyone yells yes. But I just said "Not yet." After doing that five times I had to tell them. There was yelling involved. They went crazy. It was so fun to see their faces. I think some of the teachers were as excited as the kids. Let's just say there was crying involved. Well, we are going on April 30th. The weather should be nicer by then. I can't wait! If you haven't been to the Omaha Zoo it is ranked as the second best place to take your family in the country. We are so lucky to have an awesome zoo so close. If you are ever in the area check it out! It's AWESOME! I can't wait to go! <br />
